Preview: 5th Annual Burger Brawl

It’s no secret that for quite a while, the burger has been king in Philadelphia.  Even some of the most upscale restaurants have one, or their take on one, and every bar in the city worth its salt probably has multiple incarnations. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that for its 5th annual event, The Burger Brawl is boasting a pretty impressive lineup of participants.

On Sunday, June 14, over 60 restaurants will lend their talents to the space at XFINITY Live to raise money to help increase literacy by using technology for Philadelphia’s underserved children in public schools.  For $35 for a general admission ticket, or $100 for a VIP pass, you can help the cause (which has raised over $500,000 in the past four years) all while eating tasty burgers from some of Philadelphia’s top bars and restaurants. The event will take place from 3:00 – 6:00pm (or begin at 2:00pm if you buy a VIP ticket).

You can find the full list of participants on the Burger Brawl website, but some of the highlights include burger stalwarts Good Dog (who has one of the best in Philadelphia), Blue Duck, Bareburger, P’Unk Burger, Spot Burgers, Butcher and Singer, 500 Degrees, and Village Whiskey.  Some places not necessarily known for their burgers but known for their great food include Aldine, Barbuzzo, Circles Thai, Parc, Paesano’s, and Dandelion.  Be sure to check the website for the full list, because there is quite the field of competitors to be crowned Best Burger.

The event is open to all ages, and children under 10 can attend for free.  There is a cash bar, but if you get the VIP ticket, you will be given a complimentary alcoholic beverage along with your extra hour of burger-eating.  You will also have access to a special VIP lounge to relax and get away from the crowds—the event is anticipating 5,000 attendees this year!  With that many people expected, the extra money to spend on the VIP pass to get in ahead of most of the attendees and try your most anticipated burgers before the lines start to grow is well worth the investment.

Buy your ticket here, and be happy with the fact that you are improving Philly-area schools while stuffing yourself to the point of illness with burger after burger. I can’t think of any better way to spend a Sunday, and if you can I’d like to know what magical ideas you have.  Perhaps you can tell me over burgers at the Burger Brawl.

Question: What is your favorite burger in Philadelphia?  Let us know in the comments.
